Before you begin your daily routine, write down the tasks that you should complete during the day or general according to the SMART criteria.
The SMART criteria are a set of guidelines to help you set effective goals.
Each letter in SMART represents a different criterion:
- Specific: Define your goal clearly and precisely. Avoid vague or ambiguous statements. Ask yourself the who, what, where, when, and why to make your goal specific.Example: Instead of saying “Exercise more,” make it specific by saying “Go for a 30-minute jog three times a week.”
- Measurable: Establish concrete criteria for tracking your progress and determining when you’ve reached your goal. This helps you stay motivated and provides a clear endpoint.Example: Instead of saying “Lose weight,” make it measurable by saying “Lose 10 pounds in two months.”
- Achievable: Ensure that your goal is realistic and attainable. While it’s good to challenge yourself, setting unattainable goals can lead to frustration and loss of motivation.Example: If you’re currently jogging for 15 minutes, don’t set a goal of running a marathon next month. Instead, set a goal that stretches you but is still achievable, such as running for 30 minutes.
- Relevant: Your goal should be meaningful and aligned with your broader objectives. It should be relevant to your values and the direction you want to take in your life.Example: If your broader objective is to improve overall health, a relevant goal might be “Include more vegetables in every meal” rather than a goal unrelated to health.
- Time-Bound: Set a specific timeframe for achieving your goal. This adds a sense of urgency and helps prevent procrastination.Example: Instead of saying “Someday I’ll learn to play the guitar,” make it time-bound by saying “Enroll in guitar lessons and play a basic song within three months.”
Applying the SMART criteria to your goals can make them more focused, achievable, and actionable. It also provides a framework for regular evaluation and adjustment, helping you stay on track and motivated throughout the process.
